Concept of the Name

Linguistic Meaning:

Linguistic Meaning:

The name Ar-Rahman is derived from rahmah (mercy), and it conveys a more intense meaning than Ar-Rahim (the Merciful).

Ar-Rahman refers to the One whose mercy encompasses all creation in this world and is reserved for the believers in the Hereafter. Allah says: " The Most Merciful [who is] above the Throne established." [Qur’an: 20: 5]. The use of the name Ar-Rahman with regard to His establishment over the Throne indicates that His mercy extends to all of creation.

Ar-Rahman refers to a permanent and inherent attribute of Allah, one that is integral to His being. This is a name that Allah has forbidden others from using for themselves, as it is equated with the name that belongs to Him alone, which is "Allah." Additionally, a chapter of the Quran is named Surah Ar-Rahman.

References from the Quran

1- The name Ar-Rahman instills in the servant a sense of reverence and love for Allah, the Exalted, as he contemplates and reflects on the power and grandeur of Ar-Rahman’s creation. Allah the Exalted said: "The Most Merciful (Ar-Rahman). Taught the Quran. Created man. [And] Taught him eloquence" [Quran: 1-4].

2- The Creation's Need for Ar-Rahman: He, the Exalted, is above all creation, whether they are believers or disbelievers. Their lives are sustained by His permission, their sustenance hidden in His unseen, their continuance contingent on His will and command. They have no power or might except by His power and might. He is the King, and He is Ar-Rahman who rose over His Throne and manages the affairs of creation in His kingdom. Therefore, no believer or disbeliever can truly dispense with Him. Allah the Exalted says: "He who created the heavens and the earth and what is between them in six days and then established Himself above the Throne - the Most Merciful, so ask about Him one well informed [i.e., the Prophet (ﷺ)]." [Quran 25: 59]

3 - Contemplating the Effects of Ar-Rahman in the Universe: "[And] who created seven heavens in layers. You do not see in the creation of the Most Merciful any inconsistency. So, return [your] vision [to the sky]; do you see any breaks?" [Quran 67: 3]. "Do they not see the birds above them with wings outspread and [sometimes] folded in? None holds them [aloft] except the Most Merciful. Indeed He is, of all things, Seeing." [Quran 67: 19]. These phenomena mentioned by Allah, if it were not for Ar-Rahman, they would not exist. Ar-Rahman is the one who facilitates, arranges, and manages.

4- Connecting the Blessings in Our Lives to the Name Ar-Rahman: A chapter of the Quran is named after Him, Ar-Rahman, unlike any other name of Allah, and it contains a verse repeated more than thirty times reminding the servant of his Lord's blessings: "So which of the favors of your Lord would you deny?" [Qur’an 55: 13]. No other chapter in the Quran is named after any other name of Allah except Ar-Rahman. Thus, the servant worships his Lord with it out of reverence and respect. It is a chapter that includes attributes of majesty and honor befitting only Allah. It ends with: "Blessed is the name of your Lord, Owner of Majesty and Honor." [Qur’an 55: 78]. Hence, the jinn honored their Lord with due respect, and we are more deserving to do so. Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: "The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came out to his companions and recited to them Surah Ar-Rahman from beginning to end, and they were silent. He said: 'I recited it to the jinn on the night of the jinn, and their response was better than yours. Whenever I came to the verse: (So which of the favors of your Lord would you deny?), they said: None of your blessings, our Lord, do we deny. All praise is due to You.'"

5- Seeking Refuge in Allah by His Name Ar-Rahman: Due to the greatness of Ar-Rahman, no one can harm someone who seeks refuge in Ar-Rahman. Listen to our lady Mary (peace be upon her) when she isolated herself in a place far from her family to be alone with Allah, and she took a veil to prevent anyone from seeing her. Despite that, Angel Gabriel entered and she was frightened by him, as how could he enter after all these veils? So, she sought refuge from him in the one who protects and preserves whoever seeks refuge in Him and sought help, Ar-Rahman: "And she took, in seclusion from them, a screen. Then We sent to her Our Angel [i.e., Gabriel], and he represented himself to her as a well-proportioned man. She said, "Indeed, I seek refuge in the Most Merciful from you, [so leave me], if you should be fearing of Allah." " [Quran 19: 17-18]. Seek refuge in Ar-Rahman and He will protect you, cling to Ar-Rahman and He will safeguard you, and seek His help and turn to Him for assistance and He will aid you, for He is the One sought for help against anyone who wants to wrong you. "[The Prophet (ﷺ)] has said, 'My Lord, judge [between us] in truth. And our Lord is the Most Merciful, the one whose help is sought against that which you describe.'" [Qur’an 21: 112].
